City traffic signals, coordinated

Signal phases optimised across a city network in simulation: about 20% less vehicle waiting time than the conventional method. A 2020 simulation study delivered through our platform network with a quantum-inspired optimiser; not a field trial.

Impact

Less waiting across the network
Baseline: the conventional signal-timing method
Condition: about 20% less vehicle waiting time, in simulation, June 2020

The problem

Signal timings set junction by junction leave traffic backing up across the network. Coordinating them is a large combinatorial problem the conventional method handles locally.

Our approach

Signal phases across the network were optimised together with a cloud quantum-inspired optimiser and the vehicle waiting time measured in a traffic simulator against the conventional method.

The evidence

  • −20% vehicle waiting time against the conventional method; simulation; quantum-inspired optimiser; 2020.
  • Not claimed: a field result, or a quantum-hardware contribution.

Status: Platform network + Simulation. Delivered through our platform network; quantum-inspired optimisation; simulation, 2020; not a field trial.
